About DC Arts Beat

DCArtsBeat.com doesn't owe favors to anyone. In that way, it's an eclectic, deliberately spare guide to fine arts events in the Washington, D.C. area. So it's indulgently personal too, from the perspective of this one local arts junkie who saw an open niche: Other arts-minded blogs still seem fixed on mining "what's hot/what's not," maybe forgiving mediocrity under a haze of social conscience. And the major news outlets around town seem obliged to cover just about everything. Rejecting any such sense of obligation, here'll you'll find infrequent essays on contemporary arts in the classical tradition (even when they shriek out avant-garde).  This blog is not nouveau riche and it is not trying to be classy.

Also:  It is not the day job.  Which can be a good thing, against the grain of full-time critics and their accumulated biases. Comments on everything are welcome. You can send tips using the link at the top of the page, or call (202) 670-1451 and leave a message.  Apart from reading the mostly dormant stream of long-form essays here (seems like one per year these days!), please follow the active feed of local event tips, and updates, via Twitter @dcartsbeat, via Facebook, via Google+, or via RSS feed.  You can also enter your email address, at the right, for directly emailed updates of essays that may appear here once in a blue moon.
